Referrals

Tracking an NHS Referral

Once we send your referral to the hospital or specialist service, the specialist team will review the information and decide how quickly you need to be seen based on clinical priority.

Please note that the practice cannot see your position on a hospital waiting list and we are unable to speed up routine appointments unless new clinical concerns arise.

The quickest way to check waiting times and referral information is through the NHS websites below:

NHS My Planned Care

NHS e-Referral Service (Choose and Book)

Track or manage your referral appointment online where available.

If you have questions about an appointment that has already been arranged, please contact the hospital or clinic directly using the contact details provided by them.

If you need to contact the practice regarding your referral, please use our online Admin request form.

Referrals made by other services

If your referral was made by a hospital consultant, community service, dentist, optician, physiotherapist, or another healthcare provider, you will need to contact that service directly regarding appointment updates or waiting times.

The GP practice may not have access to referrals made outside of the surgery and may be unable to track or chase these on your behalf.

Urgent Suspected Cancer Referrals (2 Week Wait)

If your GP has referred you urgently to hospital for further investigations, this is often called a “2 Week Wait” referral.

An urgent referral does not mean you have cancer. Most patients referred through this pathway are not diagnosed with cancer, however it is important that symptoms are investigated as quickly as possible.

What happens next?

  • The hospital will usually contact you within 2 weeks
  • Your appointment may be face-to-face, telephone, or video consultation
  • You may require tests before or after your appointment
  • Please ensure we have your correct telephone number and address

If you have not heard from the hospital

If you have not been contacted within 7 days of your referral being sent, please contact the hospital directly using the contact details provided in your referral information.

If you cannot attend

Please contact the hospital as soon as possible to rearrange your appointment. Missing or declining appointments may delay investigations and you may be discharged back to your GP.

Support while waiting

You may find the following websites helpful:

Private Referrals

While we provide NHS services, some patients choose private healthcare.

Examples of private referral work include:

  • Referral letters to private consultants
  • Completion of private hospital or insurance forms
  • Supporting medical documentation

Administrative Fee

A fixed fee of £35.00 (cash only) applies to private referral requests.

This fee covers standard administrative work associated with preparing and processing private referral documentation.

Additional fees may apply for complex reports, lengthy forms, or requests requiring significant GP input. You will be informed in advance if this applies.

Payment

Payment must be made in full before any private referral paperwork or supporting documentation is issued.

Private referral work does not take priority over NHS clinical duties.

Please allow up to 6 weeks for completion due to current clinical workload and limited GP capacity.

Private referral documents are non-refundable once prepared.
