World Pre-Eclampsia Day – 22 May  2025

World Pre-Eclampsia Day raises awareness of a serious condition that can affect women during pregnancy, typically after 20 weeks. Pre-eclampsia can lead to complications for both mother and baby if not identified and managed early.

What to look out for:

  • High blood pressure
  • Swelling (especially in hands, face, feet)
  • Persistent headaches
  • Blurred vision or flashing lights
  • Sudden weight gain

You may be at higher risk if:

  • It’s your first pregnancy
  • You’re expecting twins or more
  • You have a history of high blood pressure, kidney disease, or diabetes
  • You’re over 40 or have a BMI over 30

What can help:

  • Regular blood pressure checks
  • Attending all antenatal appointments
  • Taking low-dose aspirin if recommended
  • Discussing symptoms with your midwife or GP right away
