World Pre-Eclampsia Day raises awareness of a serious condition that can affect women during pregnancy, typically after 20 weeks. Pre-eclampsia can lead to complications for both mother and baby if not identified and managed early.
What to look out for:
- High blood pressure
- Swelling (especially in hands, face, feet)
- Persistent headaches
- Blurred vision or flashing lights
- Sudden weight gain
You may be at higher risk if:
- It’s your first pregnancy
- You’re expecting twins or more
- You have a history of high blood pressure, kidney disease, or diabetes
- You’re over 40 or have a BMI over 30
What can help:
- Regular blood pressure checks
- Attending all antenatal appointments
- Taking low-dose aspirin if recommended
- Discussing symptoms with your midwife or GP right away
