World Menopause Day 2026: Chronic Pain at Midlife

The theme for World Menopause Day 2026 is “Chronic Pain at Midlife: From Recognition to Evidence-Based Care.”

This year’s campaign, led by the International Menopause Society, highlights the importance of recognising, understanding and appropriately managing persistent pain during and after the menopause transition.

Chronic pain affects many women during midlife, yet symptoms can sometimes be overlooked, misunderstood or attributed solely to ageing or hormonal changes.

Some people may experience:

  • Persistent joint pain or stiffness.
  • Muscle aches and discomfort.
  • Recurring headaches or migraines.
  • Worsening of existing pain conditions.
  • Pain that interferes with sleep, mobility or everyday activities.

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause may contribute to certain aches and pains. However, not all pain experienced during midlife is caused by menopause.

Persistent or worsening pain should not simply be dismissed as a normal part of getting older.

Appropriate medical assessment can help identify possible causes and determine suitable treatment and support.

This year’s campaign encourages greater awareness, better recognition of women’s experiences and access to evidence-based, individualised care.
