Emergency Care Practitioners

Emergency Care Practitioners (ECPs) are experienced healthcare professionals who assess and manage a range of urgent and acute health problems.

They work alongside our GPs and wider clinical team to help patients receive appropriate care for problems that need prompt assessment.

What can an Emergency Care Practitioner help with?

Depending on your needs, an ECP may be able to assess and manage problems such as:

  • New or worsening acute illness
  • Minor injuries
  • Infections and other urgent health concerns
  • Sudden changes in an existing condition
  • Other problems requiring prompt clinical assessment

They can assess your symptoms, carry out examinations and arrange appropriate treatment or follow-up within their scope of practice.

Why have I been booked with an ECP?

Our Care Navigation team may offer you an appointment with an Emergency Care Practitioner when your symptoms are suitable for their clinical expertise.

This can help you receive the right care without unnecessarily waiting for a GP appointment.

If your ECP feels that you need further assessment or input from another clinician, they can arrange or discuss the appropriate next steps.
