Pregnant? Self-Refer for Antenatal (Pregnancy) Care

If you think you are pregnant, you should self-refer for NHS maternity care as soon as possible.

You do not need to see a GP first.

Early self-referral helps ensure you receive timely care, including important early screening tests. Maternity services aim to see patients before 10 weeks of pregnancy wherever possible.

How to self-refer

You can self-refer online directly to NHS maternity services using the links below.
Please choose one hospital and complete the online form.

Luton & Dunstable (L&D) Hospital

Bedford Hospital

Lister Hospital

Once you have completed the form, your Community Midwife will contact you to arrange your first booking appointment.

Can I choose which hospital to have my maternity care with?

When completing your self-referral, you may be asked to select a preferred hospital.

Most patients will receive antenatal care through their local maternity service.
If you would like your care to take place at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, please indicate this clearly on your self-referral form.

The maternity team will assess your request and advise whether this can be arranged, based on clinical need and local NHS pathways.

Please note:

  • Patients cannot self-refer directly to Addenbrooke’s outside of approved pathways
  • Acceptance is decided by the maternity services, not the GP practice

Do I need to contact the GP surgery?

No.
You do not need a GP appointment to start your pregnancy care.

GPs remain available if:

  • you have other medical conditions
  • you are taking regular medication
  • you have concerns unrelated to routine maternity booking

Important reminder

👉 Please self-refer as soon as you find out you are pregnant to allow your maternity care to be planned early and safely.
