On a weekly basis our practice nurses run Asthma, Diabetes and Cardiac Clinics. They cover all aspects of preventative care and look at a patient’s lifestyle including blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring.
All appropriate women aged 25-64 are entered into our computerised cervical cytology call and recall system. Letters are sent out at regular intervals. If you are unsure about when you are due for your next smear, please ring and discuss this with a Practice Nurse.
We offer a range of methods of contraception: the pill, IUD, cap, injectable and emergency contraception. Our service is confidential for all patients, including young people.
The Practice has two Counsellors who each hold weekly sessions. Referral to a Counsellor is made after consultation with a Doctor.
Our Hospital Dietician holds a weekly session. She advises on all aspects of diet. Appointments are made following consultation with a Doctor or Practice Nurse.
The Practice's District Nurses are based at the Health Centre. They provide care to patients at home who are housebound and unable to attend the Practice. They meet with the Doctors on a daily basis and can be contacted on 01767 224161.
New patients registering with the practice are required to attend a health check-up. This includes a questionnaire on past medical history and lifestyle together with a simple examination including height, weight, blood pressure and examination of urine. We also offer well person checks including those for patients over the age of 75 and for those who have not had a consultation in the Practice within the last three years. The check will include lifestyle advice together with the above examinations.
The health visitors attached to the practice are based at the health centre. They are trained in public and family health with particular emphasis on child development. They are in regular contact with our doctors. They can be contacted on 01767 224161.
We have the services of a Nurse/Counsellor who supports our patients and their families who are coping with cancer.
All the Doctors provide antenatal and postnatal care in conjunction with the Consultant Obstetrician concerned. We do not conduct deliveries in a GP Maternity Unit, and we do not book pregnancies for home delivery, although we share the same care with the hospital and Midwives before and after delivery in the usual way. The Midwife holds a weekly session in the Practice and also sees patients in their own home.
Every morning our Minor Illness Nurse sees patients with minor ailments. You may ask to see her or Reception may offer you an appointment with her.
If you have a small cut, bruise, minor dislocation, a blow to the head, a small burn or a foreign body that requires removal then please advise our Reception Team who will arrange for you to see a Doctor or a Practice Nurse. If it is a major injury then please go straight to the nearest Accident and Emergency Department at the Hospital.
We perform minor surgical operations on the premises including injection of joints, nail surgery, biopsy of skin lumps/moles and cryotherapy of warts. Patients will be placed on a waiting list and contacted when an appointment is available.
The Shared Care Coordinator for Adult Drug Treatment holds a fortnightly clinic in conjunction with one of the Doctors to help patients with problems with the use of drugs.
Our Practice Nurses will be pleased to offer advice and support for patients wishing to give up smoking. Please ask Reception to make an appointment for you.
A Doctor may ask you to attend an appointment with the nurse for a dressing, removal of stitches, ear syringing, blood pressure check, an injection or a blood test.
Following the birth of a baby you will be invited to attend an appointment with a Doctor who will carry out the eight week check on a baby and give the baby its first injections.
Subsequent injections will be given at our weekly children's clinic for all babies and children up to the age of five. This covers all aspects of preventative medicine and immunisation.
We recommend that everyone should be immunised against tetanus and polio.
We offer a range of advice and necessary immunisation relating to travel to any foreign country. Please complete a Travel Questionnaire in order that our Nurse can assess what immunisations are required. Some items are chargeable and these are shown on the questionnaire.
There is information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below:
It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work. If there is not sufficient time for you to have the necessary vaccinations at the Practice then you may be advised to attend a Private Health Clinic who will charge for the service.
Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.
Travel Health Questionnaire
To help us offer the appropriate advice, please complete a Travel Questionnaire and return it to the surgery.(The questionnaire can either be downloaded from the link above or ask at Reception). You must sign the questionnaire before we can process your request.
Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:
The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.
